UNDERSTANDING IJAZAH

What Is a Quran Ijazah?

An Ijazah is a traditional Islamic authorization granted by a qualified Quran teacher to a student who has demonstrated the required level of accuracy in Quran recitation, Tajweed or memorization.

It represents a connection between generations of Quran teachers and students. Through this traditional system, the Holy Quran has been carefully recited, taught and transmitted throughout Islamic history.

Unlike an ordinary course completion certificate, an Ijazah recognizes demonstrated mastery and includes a connected chain of transmission known as Sanad.

  • Demonstrated Quranic recitation proficiency
  • Assessment by an authorized Quran teacher
  • Traditional teacher-to-student transmission
  • Connected Sanad when Ijazah is granted
THE TRADITION OF TRANSMISSION

Understanding Sanad in Quran Learning

Sanad refers to the chain of teachers through whom Quranic knowledge and recitation have been transmitted. It connects a student to their teacher and continues through previous generations of qualified Quran teachers.

This traditional chain is an important part of preserving the authentic recitation of the Holy Quran.

Why Is a Connected Sanad Important?

A connected Sanad establishes the scholarly transmission behind an Ijazah. It records the chain through which the student received and demonstrated their Quranic recitation.

An Ijazah is granted only when the authorized teacher is satisfied that the student has achieved the required standard.

RECOGNIZING QURANIC MASTERY

Who Can Grant a Quran Ijazah?

  • Assessment by an authorized teacher
  • Verified recitation or memorization proficiency
  • Relevant Quranic transmission pathway
  • Connected Sanad when granted
Enrollment in an Ijazah preparation program does not automatically guarantee an Ijazah. The final decision belongs to the authorized teacher.

What is the difference between Ijazah and Sanad?

Ijazah is the authorization granted by a qualified teacher after a student meets the required standard. Sanad is the connected chain of teachers through whom the Quranic knowledge and recitation are transmitted.
